Ranging from a conventional kitchen tea or bridal shower to hens’ party or bachelorette bash, these pre-wedding parties are typically organised by the maid of honour and bridesmaids, and take place between a couple of months to a few days before the weddi...
Bridesmaids should bear in mind that while the ‘surprise’ element has become the norm, it’s wise to find out beforehand exactly what type of party the bride herself would like.

Those attending usually include the bride’s close female friends and relatives, as well as future sisters-in-law. While moms and aunts are invited to the traditional bridal shower, it’s probably best to leave them off the guest list when organising something a bit more daring!

Although the chief bridesmaid is the one to do the planning, when it comes to paying for the party it’s generally accepted that all attendees (with the exception of the bride) will split the bill equally. Regarding the budget, be aware that what is considered inexpensive by some might be quite pricey by another’s standards.

It’s therefore advisable to come up with a few different plans and cost estimates, and then find out what’s affordable for everyone.

Shower power

The home-grown version of the bridal shower is known as a kitchen tea, which can be in the form of a morning or afternoon tea party, or a get-together after work with drinks and snacks or supper. Kitchen teas tend to involve games, such as having to guess the type of gift from an attached rhyme, or a quiz with questions about the couple’s relationship … all of which adds to the fun of the event!

Gifts bought for the bride are generally kitchen-related (hence ‘kitchen’ tea), and can range from garlic crushers to designer cookware. These days, many brides opt for kitchen tea registries at a department or home-ware store to make sure they receive just what they need.

Other party options include linen showers, where you can stock up on everyday as well as gloriously luxurious table and bed linen, or pamper parties where presents could include lingerie, bath and beauty products, or perhaps a voucher for a pedicure or facial at a local beauty salon.

Another trend is to for couples to hold a combined shower, such as a cellar shower or pantry party, which allows them to celebrate with all their friends. Here, suitable gourmet gifts could include anything from corkscrews to fine wines and champagnes, imported cheeses and bottled delicacies, or even different varieties of coffees and teas.

Party girls

A girls’ night out might consist of an evening spent at home or in a club, pub or restaurant, with current hot trends for hens’ nights including the following:

• An evening of manicures and beauty treatments

• A fun workout before the wedding at a pole dancing home party

• A pool party complete with exotic cocktails

• Dinner at a top restaurant

The hens’ night is also evolving to include day or even weekend excursions, with destination bachelorette parties all the rage. A popular option is a spa break, where you and your girlfriends can indulge in massages, facials and gourmet meals.

All that healthy pampering is wonderful for leaving you feeling relaxed and refreshed before the big day.

If you and your friends love the great outdoors, why not consider a rejuvenating weekend at a chalet in the mountains? Or opt for something a bit more upmarket, like a weekend away at a top hotel or casino to celebrate in style!

Bachelor boys

Contemporary bachelor parties are a far cry from the binge-drinking, strip-joint-carousing excursions of yesteryear. Remember that the first and most important element of a successful party is good company, so choose your guests wisely!

A current trend is to party at home, with ideas ranging from games and movie evenings to poker tournaments and theme parties – think 1970s, the Godfather or Island Style.

Other top activities for the guys include golf days, paintball parties, tickets for the big game or even a rock concert.
