Bridal showers revisited
We give you some modern alternatives. Bridal showers have always been an opportunity for close family and friends to express their good wishes and contribute to the couple's future happiness. However, the kitchen tea, which is by far the most popular..... Useful as certain kitchen gadgets might be, the party is a flagrant reminder of the old adage: a woman's place is in the kitchen, preferably barefoot and pregnant. Anyone who still subscribes to this view deserves to be knocked over the head with a rolling pin!

For today's modern woman, the kitchen tea is not only inappropriate, it also reeks of injustice. The male equivalent for bidding farewell to singledom is, traditionally, a thinly-disguised excuse to indulge in a raucous, unruly bash with their buddies.

The future bride, by comparison, is expected to be content with graciously accepting strainers and vegetable scrapers.

Now it is time to revolutionise this archaic tradition. Time to trade boring and ordinary for a day of pampering and excitement! As a tribute to the modern bride, Here are some alternative, modern approach to bridal showers:

Primarily Pantry

Although more traditional, the pantry party is a kitchen tea with a difference. This shower aims to stock the couple with some essential groceries and items to bide them through the first months of marriage. Great gifts include tinned foods, an extensive range of herbs and spices, storage containers and more.

To add that touch of magic, introduce a special theme. An elegant cheese and wine affair will certainly make the occasion memorable, with glamorous eveningwear adding to the mood. Light, classic music, fine friends and the delicate bouquets of choice wines, create an evening never to be forgotten.

Pyjama Parade

When last did you have a sleep-over bash? Sadly, when we get married we usually have to say goodbye to those wonderful schoolgirl antics that were once treasured. Invite the bride's friends to a sleep-over shower with a strict pyjama only dress-code!

Then, indulge in hot chocolate and popcorn while watching your favourite romantic movie. Lingerie and linen are the perfect gifts for this shower. Select from an exquisite range of duvets, sheets and exquisite bedroom attire: comfy slippers, soft, sexy satin or warm, luxurious winterwear will all be appreciated.

Sophisticated Style

Spoil the bride to a wonderful picnic adventure. A secluded spot in a secret garden creates the perfect aura of mystique and timelessness. Settle down with some treasured friends to enjoy fresh country air and sensual, mood-lifting food. Strawberries and cream or a lavish, sinfully chocolate dessert complement the mood.

As for gifts, ask the bride's friends to assist with compiling the picnic basket. Beautiful cutlery sets, napkins and tableware make the ideal presents for this occasion. And remember, teddy bears love a good picnic - make sure they're not left behind!

Seriously Sensual

This shower is the most indulgent and rejuvenating of all - perfect for the bride with frayed wedding nerves! Invite a crowd over for a day of relaxation and pampering and turn your home into a health hydro.

Spas, manicures and facials are impressive party favours, and anything of luxury makes a fantastic present. Soft, absorbent towels, therapeutic aromatherapy oils, revitalising exfoliation creams and moisturisers will all be greatly appreciated, not to mention favourite fragrances, bubble baths and a selection indispensable cosmetics.

The legend of bridal showers

Long ago in a small, Dutch village, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy business magnate fell in love with a poverty-stricken miller. Though the miller's feet were always bare and he had only a thin layer of old clothing to cover him, he was adored by all the village people for his warm, generous nature.

He brightened the lives of many with his cheer, helping the sick and the elderly at every turn, and offering his last morsel of food to stray dogs that roamed the streets.

When the miller proposed to the businessman's lovely daughter, her heart leapt with joy and she danced around the town, unable to conceal her excitement. However, on hearing the news of his daughter's imminent marriage, the businessman was furious!

In his wrath, he forbade the marriage and refused the girl her dowry if she dared disobey him. (Secretly, he had arranged for her to marry the banker's son - a mean, spiteful man with a cold gaze and a pasty complexion.)

The village people were most distressed when they learnt of the businessman's harsh ruling, so they immediately set to work on a plan that would help the young couple forever...

The plan they devised was to shower the bride with useful household gifts. Some made beautiful hand-quilted blankets, while others brought dishes, pots and pans. Soon, with the generous help of the villagers, the young couple were able to wed, and the bride's father soon learnt that there are things in life more valuable than money.
